Broadband on wireless networks can be deceiving, it pays to be a little educated. First of all there is a speed for downloading and usually a slower speed for uploading data probably because we generally receive more data than we send. The latest 3G networks uses HSDPA (down) and HSUPA (up).
The acronym for the technology called HSDPA stands for high-speed downlink packet access, delivers speeds of up to 42.2 Mbps. Vodacom offers speeds of 7.2 on the upload (HSUPA). But be aware that mobile networks do suffer latency and using products like Skype which require steady streaming can be a problem. Also let us not forget the speed of your modem may govern the actual transmission speed so it pays to upgrade the modem hardware when your upgrade is due or flash the modem to a faster speed if that option is available.
While some networks may make the claim, commercially there are no 4G networks in South Africa, 4G is only possible with the installation of a LTE network.

DATA USAGE SMS
NOTIFICATIONS
Vodacom has introduced another data usage SMS notification option to its
customers - one that would allow a notification via SMS to be sent to an
alternate cellphone number as specified by the customer.
Customers would ideally use this option if they are not able to receive
their current data usage SMS notifications via their existing Vodafone
Mobile Connect Software.
Please advise customer to follow the following steps to enable this feature:
DATA ROUTER (devices not able to receive SMS notifications)
DATA CARDS / MODEMS (devices able to receive SMS notifications)
Remove the data SIM card from the data card and insert it into another
device / cellphone.
Send an SMS "altnum 0xx xxxxxxx" (last 9 digits of the alternate cellphone
number they wish their notifications to be sent to) to 123, free of charge.
Using their data SIM card, send an SMS with "altnum 0xx xxxxxxx" (last 9
digits of the alternate cellphone number they wish their notifications to be
sent to) from the dashboard software to 123, free of charge.
An activation notification message will be sent to the customer's specified
alternate cellphone number.
An activation notification message will then be sent to the customer's
specified alternate cellphone number.
From then on all data usage threshold alerts will be redirected to the
alternate cellphone number.
NOTE: the 10 digit cellphone number identified does NOT have to be on
the
Vodacom network. i.e. the customer can choose to have his data SMS
notifications sent to his MTN or Cell C cellphone number.
Note to load airtime or a data bundle on a prepaid data SIM Card or Top up SIM, there is no need to remove the SIM card, this can be loaded remotely (over the air) at any Cellucity store provided you have the correct phone number assigned to that SIM card.
